A prison in eastern North Carolina was placed on lockdown Saturday after one inmate allegedly killed another in a brawl. Officials at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, NC said Kevin R. Taylor, Jr., 23, was struck with a homemade weapon around 1:15 p.m.
Prison staff said they responded and provided medical attention while the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and EMS were called. Taylor was pronounced dead at 1:27 p.m by EMS.
Taylor was housed in the regular population section, serving a 5-year, 5-month prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was admitted to prison on Jan. 1, 2019 after he was convicted in Mecklenburg County.
The other prisoner involved in the incident was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The two-story Eastern Correctional Institution sits on 38 acres surrounded by double fences. The institution has five housing units, each designed to hold 96 offenders in single cells. Each regular population housing unit is divided into three wings with 24 cells.
